Hello lesbian and gay Americans. I am proud to stand before you as a lesbian today. With hearts full of love and the abiding faith in justice, we have come to Washington to speak to America. We have come to speak the truth of our lives and silence the liars. We have come to challenge the cowardly Congress to end its paralysis and exercise moral leadership. We have come to defend our honor and win our equality. But most of all we have come in peace and with courage to say, "America, this day marks the end from exile of the gay and lesbian people. We are banished no more. We wander the wilderness of despair no more. We are afraid no more. For on this day, with love in our hearts, we have come out, and we have come out across America to build a bridge of understanding, a bridge of progress, a bridge as solid as steel, a bridge to a land where no one suffers prejudice because of their sexual orientation, their race, their gender, their religion,
or their human difference."

I have been asked by the March organizers to speak in five minutes about the far right, the far right which threatens the construction of that bridge. The extreme right which has targeted everyone of you and me for extinction. The supremacist right which seeks to redefine the very meaning of democracy. Language itself fails in this task, my friends, for to call our opponents "The Right," states a profound untruth. They are wrong - they are wrong morally, they are wrong spiritually, and they are wrong politically.

The Christian supremacists are wrong spiritually when they demonize us. They are wrong when they reduce the complexity and beauty of our spirit into a freak show. They are wrong spiritually, because, if we are the untouchables of America -- if we are the untouchables -- then we are, as Mahatma Gandhi said, children of God. And as God's children we know that the gods of our understanding, the gods of goodness and love and righteousness, march right here with us today.

The supremacists who lead the anti-gay crusade are wrong morally. They are wrong because justice is moral, and prejudice is evil; because truth is moral and the lie of the closet is the real sin; because the claim of morality is a subtle sort of subterfuge, a stratagem which hides the real aim which is much more secular. Christian supremacist leaders like Bill Bennett and Pat Robertson, Lou Sheldon and Pat Buchanan, supremacists like Phyllis Schlafley, Ralph Reid, Bill Bristol, R.J., Rushoodie -- the supremacists don't care about morality, they care about power. They care about social control. And their goal, my friends, is the reconstruction of American Democracy into American Theocracy.

We who are gathered here today must prove the religious right wrong politically and we can do it. That is our challenge. You know they have made us into the communists of the nineties. And they say they have declared cultural war against us. It's war all right. It's a war about values. On one side are the values that everyone here stands for. Do you know what those values are? Traditional American values of democracy and pluralism. On the other side are those who want to turn the Christian church in government, those whose value is monotheism.

We believe in democracy, in many voices co-existing in peace, and people of all faiths living together in harmony under a common civil framework known as the United States Constitution. Our opponents believe in monotheism. One way, theirs. One god, theirs. One law, the Old Testament. One nation supreme, the Christian Right one. Let's name it. Democracy battles theism in Oregon, in Colorado, in Florida, in Maine, in Arizona, in Michigan, in Ohio, in Idaho, in Washington, in Montana, in every state where , my brothers and sisters, are leading the fight to oppose the Right and to defend the United States Constitution. We won the anti-gay measure in Oregon, but today 33 counties -- 33 counties and municipalities face local versions of that ordinance today. The fight has just begun. We lost the big fight in Colorado, but, thanks to the hard work of all the people of Colorado, the Boycott Colorado movement is working and we are strong. And we are going to win our freedom there eventually.

To defeat the Right politically, my friends, is our challenge when we leave this March. How can we do it? We've got to march from Washington into action at home. I challenge everyone of you, straight or gay, who can hear my voice, to join the national gay and lesbian movement. I challenge you to join NGLTF to fight the Right. We have got to match the power of the Christian supremacists, member for member, vote for vote, dollar for dollar. I challenge each of you, not just buy a T-shirt, but get involved in your movement. Get involved! Volunteer! Volunteer! Every local organization in this country needs you. Every clinic, every hotline, every youth program needs you, needs your time and your love.

And I also challenge our straight liberal allies, liberals and libertarians, independent and conservative, republican or radical. I challenge and invite you to open your eyes and embrace us without fear. The gay rights movement is not a party. It is not lifestyle. It is not a hair style. It is not a fad or a fringe or a sickness. It is not about sin or salvation. The gay rights movement is an integral part of the American promise of freedom.

We, you and I, each of us, we are the descendants of a proud tradition of people asserting our dignity. It is fitting that the Holocaust Museum was dedicated the same weekend as this March, for not only were gay people persecuted by the Nazi state, but gay people are indebted to the struggle of the Jewish people against bigotry and intolerance. It is fitting that the NAACP marches with us, that feminist leaders march with us, because we are indebted to those movements.

When all of us who believe in freedom and diversity see this gathering, we see beauty and power. When our enemies see this gathering, they see the millennium. Perhaps the Right is right about something. We call for the end of the world as we know it. We call for the end of racism and sexism and bigotry as we know it. For the end of violence and discrimination and homophobia as we know it. For the end of sexism as we know it. We stand for freedom as we have yet to know it, and we will not be denied

Ok me I love gay people and bisexuals but its still a sin and by the way Brutus and Augustus were greedy power hungry mad dogs and dont forget the Christian matrys now Catholic matrys that stood up against that "gay" heresy and they died for it too. Lets stop saying the word Christian because ur confusing me Catholic makes me feel better but i do love my protestant brothers and sisters and if you wanna if being gay is wrong read Genesis the guards were struck blind by God. The Church Fathers had plenty of writings on sin so yea

when i think about how people see being gay as a sin, basicly what they are saying is love is a sin if gay is a sin.
and even then, doesnt the bible say all sins shall be forgiven and all that jazz and everyone is a child of god ... atleast thats what i was taught in the catholic school i went to. and everyone sins, so why is loving someone of the same sex (considering it as a sin) not viewed the same as using gods name in vein? all of it just doesnt make any sense to me, the bible just goes in circles in my opinion but i would rather not get into that right now.

^ i'm half asleep so that probably isn't worded like i want it to be, but i think you get the point.

The bible isnt wrong not by any means. Soo i will just tell you in the words of st. john henry newman "Love the sinner and hate the sin". Just because God loves people doesnt mean he wants them to sin all the time. Look at Judas God loves Judas but hes probably in hell for betraying God. Its our free will to sin but that doesnt mean we wont be disciplined for it. God made us to love the right way not the wrong way sooo no missy love is not a sin. But human love sometimes has a tendancy of being clouded and selfish and being gay is straying away from reality. No one and I say No one was born gay!!! God made some men to not be attracted to women for a good reason and he made some women not to be attracted to men that was sometimes the case with the Jews helllooo!!!!

And who is god to say what is right and wrong? what about the people who dont believe in god, or the catholic god? what about the people who believe in other things? are they all going to hell? How the hell is beinggay starying away from reality? it is reality, men love men, women love women, men love women, that is as real as it gets. how can you say that no one is born gay? you can't say that, you're not in the position to, that is just your opinion. theres a board at my school put up by the gay-straight alliance that says oriantation is not a choice, but tollerance is. thats a quote from people who are actually gay and bi, not an opinion, but a fact about themselves. And im lost with what the jews have to do with this.

^sorry for everything i spelt wrong i can't spell to save my life :P

You know about the bible and sin but yet your probably an athiest or broke away from the church cuzz u thought God wasnt there. And Really Really who is God to say right or wrong? You really wana try that God is eternal, perfect, and divine and merciful but some gay people dont care about him even though he loves them sooo much so no mercy for them. He is your Creator. And the people who dont believe in God will be judged on the conscience and if you were in the Catholic church you would know that!!!

I do know about what the bible says and sin, i went to catholic school, my family is catholic. I am now Wiccan thank you very much, I believe in a God and a Goddess, I didn't believe in the catholic way, i hated everything about it, i gave it a try and found it a repulsing religion. I don't judge people on what they believe but it pisses me off when people try to preach their ways on me, i've been there done that and hated it. Maybe some gay people turn their backs from the catholic god or any god for that matter because they are judged and called sinners for loving someone. And that in my eyes is WRONG.Dont tell me he is my creator, because i don't believe it. People who live like that need to open their minds and hearts and realize there is mmore then one way to live and love throught life.

I don't believe being gay is wrong, trust me. I really don't have any problems with it whatsoever. But seriously? Has ANYONE even checked the numbers anymore? Playing the whole "Well, they're white, Christian, and bigger than us" card is total bullshit. Anymore, those "minorities" are so much bigger than the typical white population it's ridiculous to cal anyone BUT whites a "minority". This woman shows not only a lack of knowledge of her own subject matter, but a blatant and uninformed hatred of the Right wing and Christian parties. The Right wing may be against change, may be conservative, but what's wrong with that? In Rome, Conservatives such as Brutus and Cicero stood up against the rise of the Empire, and died for it. And so, in that most ancient culture, liberalism and freedom prevailed...

until Augustus died. Aside from a few other model Emperoros, such as Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperors abused their nation and power horrendously, and by the influence of their newfound reliance on total liberalism, collapsed. In the case of the army, a conversation might go like this, between an old Republican and a Imperial liberal:

C: The army must maintain strict discipline, and cannot be allowed luxury, lest they fall into dispractice and become lazy.

L: Why should the soldier who fights for us at home have to build fortifications every night, after 30 miles march, just to tear it down again when they wake? Why should they be suited for war inside their own camp, and hold their scutums at ready at all times?

Now, all historians agree that one of the major falling points of the Empire was it's lax military practices at the time. Instead of going to bed in a small, but fortified encampment, they huddled up in defenceless tents, with maybe two or three guys to stay awake and watch for intruders. They even lost the City of Rome, to Alaric the Goth, because of laziness.

But if that's not enough, let's leave our little history lesson, and see how this applies in more modern times. In the 1900's, or as most call it, our "Golden Age", we built our nation into the most powerful presence on the Earth by hard work, furious industry, and commonly held social values and morals. People took care of one another, and all prospered. The government did it's job to the letter, and not only kept out of industry in general, but managed to not sink us into so bad of a debt that we would probably never be able to pay it back. This was conservative, CHRISTIAN America.

Today, we have several shining examples about the wonders Liberalism can do for a country: Our government has sunk us into over 10 TRILLION dollars in debt. We will soon lose Medicare. The old wil be scorned, and the working man pay for not only himself and his family, but also for the "poor, sick, uneducated people" that cross the border into America every day, and live off the system for free because of their "minority" status. They raid farms and kill residents in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and other places. The Liberal view is, "Well, they don't have the things we do here, it's only fair." Well, how bout this: How bout you move down to Texas, and invite them to live with you, pay for their schooling, for their doctor bills, for their health insurance, car, car insurance, utility usage, food, clothing, luxuries, travel, phone, internet, computer, books, furniture, housing, and every other little thing they have in mind to buy and ship out of the country. Hmm? Any takers? I thought not. I'm the son of an illegal immigrant, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let some son of a bitch who feels he deserves some free American money to take back to good old mehico with him so he can afford a new car, house, and a bottle of coke at work every day for the rest of his life. I'm all for starting up schools on the borders, and for educated, hard working people to come here, and help us share and improve the American standard of living, but godamnit, I'm not paying taxes so Puablo can sit on his ass while his one brother out of 18 gets inspired to work hard and make something of his life. But I'm getting almost as off topic as the author of the speech I'm responding to is. Point is, there's nothing wrong with being gay in my book, but don't go off topic and attack conservatives and Christians. It doesn't help your speech, except in the case of the ignorant and misinformed masses that throng the doorstep of every cunning public manipulator, and it only shows you to be just as ignorant and uneducated as the rest of them.
